Japanese Stocks You Might Encounter on a Trip to Japan
Japanese stocks: 1) Alcohol, Beverage & Food Stocks; 2) Airline & Airport Stocks; 3) Hotel & Tourism Stocks; 4) Japanese Railway Stocks; 5) Restaurant Stocks; and 6) Retail Stocks.
This post (a companion post to Japan Trip Report (Plus Japanese Stocks) and Recent Japan Investing Research) covers some Japanese stocks you might encounter on a trip to Japan. Note that many of these stocks are keiretsu - a set of companies with interlocking business relationships and shareholdings. For example: Japanese railroad stocks often own hotels, entertainment facilities, retail, do property development, etc. The railway lines though would be at the core of their businesses and corporate strategy.
Other Japanese stocks are sogo shosha or general trading companies that trade in a wide range of products and materials. In addition to acting as intermediaries, they engage in logistics, plant development and other services, as well as international resource exploration. Unlike trading companies in other countries, which are generally specialized in certain types of products, sogo shosha have extremely diversified business lines - a business model unique to Japan.
