There are close to 30 publicly listed stock exchange stocks or other types of publicly listed exchanges (e.g. futures, commodities, etc.) in developed, emerging or frontier markets around the world. This post takes a closer look at all of them as I have note seen any comprehensive list or post on the Internet covering all of the ones potentially available to retail investors. [NOTE: I accidently put this post in the wrong section and it failed to email to all subscribers. So I am resending it again…]
Note that stock and other types of exchanges originated as mutual organizations owned by their member brokers. However, many exchanges have demutualized and some have had IPOs with their shares listed on a stock exchange - including the one(s) they own.
Other exchanges are still not available to retail investors as they are owned by large financial institutions or even other exchanges. For example: The Zagreb Stock Exchange purchased the Ljubljana Stock Exchange from the Wiener Börse (the Vienna Stock Exchange) and has a 5.3% ownership stake in the Macedonian Stock Exchange. The Wiener Börse still owns the Prague Stock Exchange and itself is owned by various financial institutions (meaning retail investors cannot directly own a piece of it…).
I should point out that the various types of exchanges are not entirely dependent on trading or IPO related services alone as they have many other ways to make money e.g. high-margin information or data related products or services, providing technology and related services (especially to smaller exchanges), etc.
Finally, its worth noting that ANY publicly listed exchange should, in theory, have squeaky clean financial statements and good corporate governance given the regulatory, financial institutional, broker, and investor scrutiny they would be under. After all, any whiff of scandal involving an exchange would probably blow up the entire market and leave many investors and institutions unhappy…
To make your life easier, the rest of this post includes:
The name of the exchange stock and a rough idea of what exchanges they manage or own.
A quick description of the stock with links to the IR page and stock quote(s) on Yahoo! Finance or Investing.com from frontier market exchanges.
A link to any Wikipedia page (for what it might be worth…) - most exchanges seem to have a decent Wikipedia page…
A price/book (most recent quarter) ratio plus forward or trailing P/E and dividend yields linked back to the Yahoo! Finance statistics page or Investing.com.
The latest long term technical chart linked back to Yahoo! Finance or Investing.com.
Note: This post does not cover any bitcoin or carbon trading exchanges - if there are any standalone ones that have listings somewhere…
IF I have missed a publicly listed exchange stock or a related stock (one providing specialized technology or services that facilitate exchanges, etc.) that can be accessed by retail investors, let me know in the comments…
In addition, the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE)’s statistics page has useful data and information about individual exchanges.
